Mooses International reported on the story of Bob the Moose Head last week. After being in the family for more than 20 years, a Canadian man sold him on eBay. But Bob was detained by U.S. Customs on his way to St. Louis. Bob is currently in custody of the Canadian Ministry of Natural Resources as an unlicensed pelt. And his former owner, Ken Procyk, faces fines and charges for storage.

Moosehead Beer and the Toronto Sun have taken up his case.

There’s a moose wandering around Somers, NY.

“Wendy Rosenbach, a spokeswoman with the state Department of Environmental Conservation, said state wildlife experts have been tracking the female moose, also called a cow, and are confident that she’s the same one that was wandering around Mahopac last year.

‘She wintered in Mahopac and now she’s moved to Somers,’ Rosenbach said yesterday. ‘Most likely, she’s trying to look for some love. It’s not unusual for moose to sometimes hang out with horse and other livestock. If it’s a male moose, it could be a problem if it tries to mate outside its species, but we don’t have that worry with a female.’

Rosenbach’s advice to residents who see the moose? ‘Enjoy it. It’s not often you see moose in Westchester so enjoy it. It’s a rather rare sighting. Just be careful if you’re driving and you see it on the road,’ she said. ‘We’ve been monitoring her movements and she’s appears to be doing well. Hopefully she’ll find a mate and they’ll go live happily ever after.’”

PETA honored a couple of New Hampshire men for rescuing a moose tangled in a swingset.

“PETA’s letter accompanying the “Compassionate Action” award praised the men’s work.

‘Because of the swift and compassionate actions of these police department employees, not only was the moose rescued from a potentially deadly situation, but the resulting media coverage focused attention on the worth of individual animals and the peril they face when they wanted into urban areas,’ it said.”

Moose Mascots

Langlade County, WI has a pair of moose that are making the scene. The pair is believed to have migrated from Northern Michigan where there is a moose re-introduction program. “‘I think those two represented about one-quarter of all the moose sightings in Wisconsin last year,’ said Adrian Wydeven, a mammal ecologist for the state Department of Natural Resources.”

From Sault Ste. Marie, ON, Canada: Peter Rouse noticed a moose crossing a frozen river and fall through the ice. Trapped in the flow, he and his father spent an hour breaking up ice so that the moose could escape.
